My forbidden fantasy: Voting for Trump

I am not voting for Trump. And I think Hillary is a liar and I’m voting for her anyway.

Also, I love Ivanka so much I can’t stop Googling to find more tidbits about her. And I read in many places that Chelsea is a brat and neither she nor her husband can figure out a real job to do.

And, I think I speak for a lot of people when I say that Trump is like a car crash and I love looking. I love watching him squirm out of every disgusting thing he does. I love watching him say he pays no taxes. I love the drama. American politics is boring, the two-party system is BS and everyone is pretty much the same candidate, and it’s fun to watch him shake things up. Part of me wants to vote for Trump because I want to see everything shaken up. After all, Robespierre had to terrorize France before we saw the benefits of the French Revolution.

I’m sick of Denmark. And Norway. And Sweden. I’m sick of all the research that says they are happy. People in those countries are always reporting how happy they are. Why can’t they be more like New Yorkers who are the most unhappy people in the world and wear that like a badge of honor?

It’s not just the grown ups. The kids score higher on tests, and they bike to school, or whatever. The research about happiness that comes out of these three countries is sickening to me because I’ve always been convinced that the happiness is a result of homogeneity.

It’s the same as in companies. When you read about how important diversity is to a company, you never read that it makes people happy. For example, corporate governance is more effective with women: companies that have female board members make more money. But you never read that corporate governance is more fun to do with a female mucking up the boys club. In fact, research shows that most startups can’t even function properly with diversity because it’s such a time suck to deal with.

So those tall blond Northern Europeans are happier because they keep their gene pool so pure. Not kidding. Homogeneity promotes happiness. I consider my move to rural America as proof of this hypothesis. Because I did all the research to discover that people in big cities are not happy and people in small communities are happy and I moved to one. And you know what? People are happy because they are all the same and have nothing to do but keep doing the same thing. It’s a microcosm of the Danes and the Swedes and the Norwegians.

The Economist confirms my hunch.

Just like the Eskimos have a billion words for ice, the Danes have a billion words for happiness. Hygge (pronounced hew-geh) means something like “the art of creating intimacy” or “cosiness of the soul” or “cocoa by candlelight.” The Economist says the Danes consider this concept a quintessential element of their national character.

But Denmark, Sweden and Norway are known for something besides hygge/happiness. Exclusion. Even if they are trying hard to be inclusive, those countries are among the most difficult in the world for expatriates. Because making new friends, and adapting to new people is hard. And seeing your own culture reflected back to you in another person’s culture is especially hard – because it reveals new ways of looking at tightly held beliefs. So expatriates are excluded from the happiest communities.

If you are voting for Trump, I don’t need to tell you that. You know it intuitively. Which is why I don’t want to be like you. I want to be someone who strives to see myself in new ways and puts myself in new, difficult scenarios so that I can grow. I want to grow from doing something brave and challenging more than I want the security of homogeneity and happiness.

That said, I have a fantasy that I tell everyone I’m voting for Hillary but when I get to the poll I secretly vote for Trump. And so do enough people — because really, it’s so uncool to admit publicly that you’re voting for him — and then he gets into office and that forces the Democrats and Republicans to come together in Congress to keep Trump from doing anything, which means we will finally admit what has been true all along, that there’s no difference between Democrats and Republicans, and that will open things up for other, real choices for political parties.

Maybe this is what happens when you get older: wild sex fantasies retreat to make way for wild political fantasies. But really what happens is that when you get older you get happier, and people who are more insular are happier: It’s messed up (and tricky which is why I’m doing the upcoming course on happiness).

Happiness, the way most people define it, makes you do crappy things like keep immigrants out and vote for Trump. Happiness is most powerful when it’s fueled by interestingness — diversity, unmet but engaging goals and real, meaningful choices.

That’s why I’m happy to live in a  country where our schools are a mess due to the fact that we have so many different types of families. And we can’t even have cosiness with cocoa because we can’t agree on how cocoa should be made. I like the diversity. I like that it’s difficult. The easy way is not the path to happiness.

If Trump wins, it will be bad news for the U.S. If Hillary wins, it will be bad news for the world.

Trump is an isolationist and the power of the U.S. will diminish — he won’t perpetuate foreign wars. U.S. values (free enterprise, individualism, consumerism, mass entertainment, celebrity culture) will become less influential and the values of other nations (religion, families, art, health care, non-English cultures and languages, etc.) will spread. The U.S. economy will tank — and that will be the best news for the environment and will do a lot more to slow climate change than all of Obama’s international treaties.

Along these same lines I have wondered how long it would take for the price of goods to go up, and how that would affect people. It would be quite a change from what we in the US are used too.

Also have wondered what we would do with military people, if we pull out of all conflict, NATO, Japan and Korea as he has suggested. At the same time increasing military spending and build-up. What would they all do? Where would they go?

As the daughter of a Holocaust survivor and on my mom’s side, a member of the Catholic resistance against Hitler, I am flabbergasted that many Trump adherents are not aware that his ideas come directly from the 25 points of the 1927 Nazi party platform. Take the word Jew out and sub with Mexican; the word intelligentisa and replace with elites, replace any treaties mentioned with NAFTA and there you go.

And chants of the mob to “Lock her up”? Tin pot dictators everywhere lock up their opponents.

As a USAF veteran, I thought of leaving the US. I am not going to make the mistake my grandparents on either religious side made when another demagogue took over their country. I’m close enough to the Mexican border that I can get over it if Trump wins and locks the borders IN and OUT.

As a Catholic, I can tell you that whatever Hillary;s 2 catholic advisers wrote about IS TRUE. All religions are backward, from the ones that cut off little boys’ foreskins to the ones that do not allow women the same roles and who condone sexual abuse and pedophilia. (BTW I had those 2 experiences when I was 12. Statute of limitations and the fact that the priest perp was a Colonel in the US Army meant I could not sue.)

Trump is the only answer to the question in a few weeks! He is for our nation—- even with all of the endless talk—. Everything cannot be free to our country through some of these politicians. The ones that are criminals already should never be elected. You do not lose emails and run a country either!!

  4. Jennifa
    Jennifa says:

It occurs to me that voting for Trump at this point to ‘shake everything up’ may mean you are late to the party. Everything already is shaken up. The Republican party will never be the same (no matter who wins), third party candidates in down-ballot races will now and in future elections get closer examination and consideration, and even Bernie supporters have not gone away, and will probably pick up the banner in later elections.

The electoral map will be the real winner this election, as we watch states change color for the first time in decades, and as voting blocs change, and re-gerrymandering of congressional districts may be a high priority for future third-party governors and R an D governors who will represent different groups of people than they do now.

For anybody interested in politics, this is just the beginning, no matter what the results of Nov. 8.

fantasy is definitely the right word. the republicans and democrats are “the same” and would “come together” against trump is among the most naive ideas people float — usually rich white people with the least to lose. a black mom who just lost her kid to police violence would not harbor this fantasy. a woman who needed an abortion after date-rape wouldn’t feel this way either, since mike pence wants to ban that. upshot: it’s nice to be white and on a farm.

These arguments about elections just show how fooled we really are. The truth is, the politicians are pawns of a hidden elite and have been for a very long time. The name of the game of the hidden elite is to centralize power and control in fewer and fewer hands and politicians are their puppets. The welfare state and the warfare state are just two different ways of centralizing power. No matter who is elected, power keeps getting more concentrated at the top. Elections exist to give us the illusion of choice and to keep people divided against each other.

His whole business was luxury housing for folks who could not get past a Park Avenue condo board and that means Jews, gays, blacks and Hispanics. Trumps’s daughter converted to Judaism to marry her husband. Did Chelsea do the same?

Which reminds us that people no longer vote for policies. 99% of discussion is about what candidates did personally. This is why homogeneity nor diversity are no longer the bottom line because ethnic or cultural upbringing is just a personal trait. People need an agreement on a common ground eg. commonly elected policies on how to live. If such agreement exists then someone prove to me why either mono or multi-culturalism gets in the way of happiness. I doubt it would. Also if Trump is in office it would not shake up either parties. They are not going to change.

And lets not even talk about the pattern of cheating-divorce-cheating he goes through. And what about his authoritharian way which is comparable to leaders that have unfortunately destroyed other countries like Hugo Chavez or Mussolini. A bit of history helps us to understand him and put him into context. Other nations have already gone through the populist promise of “I will fix it all, I will make this country great again” , and ALL of these promises that are based on fear have destroyed many of these countries. I understand there is a need for change, but this guy is not the right leader to manage the change. If you dont want Trump, our vote needs to go to Hillary. Voting 3rd party is voting for Trump. Staying at home is a vote for Trump. We cannot hide, and we need to take responsibility for our country. Voting 3rd party, even as much as I want it, is unfortunately not an option… it would be a hidden vote. A vote for Trump.

Are memories so short that we forget that Bill Clinton lied to the American public (“I did not have sex with that woman, Miss Lewinsky..”), Hillary Clinton clapped as her husband left the podium without answering any questions and then went on GMA and denied the accusation, again lying to the public. The Clintons also enlisted cabinet members to deny the accusations. They went on to vilify Ken Starr as a pervert, but in the end, Bill Clinton had to admit that he had lied.

If Monica had not retained the semen-stained dress, she would have met the same fate as all the other women who were crushed by the Clinton operation. The Clintons are cold blooded liars.

As far as her accomplishments go, there are precious few. She failed with Hillarycare, turning the House and Senate to the Republicans. In the State Department, the Inspector General reported that $6 billion of contracts had missing or incomplete documentation.

Her incompetence led to the death of our ambassador in Libya, and she lied to the families when she blamed it on a video. At a Congressional hearing, when asked about these events, she famously asked “With all due respect, the fact is we had four dead Americans. Was it because of a protest or was it because of guys out for a walk one night who decided that they’d they go kill some Americans? What difference at this point does it make?”

This woman is cold blooded, corrupt and has no respect for anyone who gets in the way of the fulfillment of her ambition. She has failed at almost everything she tried, but has enriched herself and stands on the brink of being president.

Normally I love how you think. Here, terrible deductive reasoning. I’m a descendant of Scandinavia in America and yes, and I’d say we are a happy bunch thanks to self deprecating humor, strong work ethic, and a healthly live and let live attitude. But that’s true surrounded by “natives” or by the “American melting pot”. It’s our culture, not our gene pool.

There are cultures that cultivate unhappiness with “pure gene pools” by being overly obsessed with honor. Or machismo. Or respect. Or authority.

Have you studied Buddhism? They’ve had the answer to happiness for centuries. It’s an inner state attainable by anyone, in any circumstance, with a disciplined mind. Letting go of ego. Practicing compassion to all living beings. Hard to sum up a whole religion/philosophy, but definitely should be added to your repertoire of happiness studies.

Omg. I don’t have enough battery left to list all that is wrong with this. The basic premise that homogeneous societies have less potential for conflict is so old and banal that it’s not really worth discussing.

Using the alleged likeness in Scandinavia to explain why Trump is no good is labored and offensive because of the underlying ignorance and blatant generalization. And Eskimos are called Inuit the same way nobody says Indians or Niggers anymore. And Inuits don’t have that many more words for ice, and the Danish don’t have more words for happiness than usual, and so on and so on.

If you need controversy to be happy, don’t judge the ones that are happy when things are basically in order. Some people are happily married to their Highschool sweetheart. If you’re the kind that needs big drama and a new partner every couple months, be my guest, but shut up and don’t try to convince everyone that’s the true way to happiness.

The big difference between Norway and the states is the level of bigotry. We have our problems but someone like Trump wouldn’t come close to public office. Crooks get arrested not elected.

Anyway, the French Revolution and the Terror and Thermidor and the Napoleonic era took France out of the catbird seat, never to return. The whole thing was, you might say, a magnificent failure.

As for Trump, I’d say that the key point is that the white working class has been the group forced to pay for the liberal race and gender politics of the last 50 years. You can imagine that they aren’t too happy about that. Now Trump is bidding to take them to the Promised Land. But they’d better remember that Moses kept the Israelites in the Wilderness for 40 years.

There’s a lot that’s been posted in the media that’s been ‘selectively’ chosen to paint one candidate better than the other, however, before you make up your mind, free it from the media blur…

    1. Trump is not a politician, so stop measuring him by that stick.
Everyone keeps talking about whether he’s “Presidential”, but which context are they using? Political or Corporate?
    2. How does fear govern the way we perceive things?
If you were used the ‘status quo’ as a politician, and suddenly there was a risk of someone coming in to shake the system up making it more difficult to get away with what you were doing, wouldn’t you be scared too?
    3. Do you believe that Trump has actually done and said everything he has, in the context it’s being relayed to you in?
It’s already been proven in an ABC news report that there was in fact a large group of people cheering on while the towers fell…but the Washington Post covered up their blunder. It’s also been proven that Trump didn’t make fun of the handicapped reporter, in-fact, his gesture is one he’s repeatedly used to portray someone who’s stammering after being called out for incorrect info.
    4. Does the President alone have enough power to change things themselves, or do they require congress/senate to back them up?
Whether Trump does a great job or a poor one really isn’t the issue…whether the system needs an overhaul and the government realigned is. Would Hilary do what needs doing? No, she’s part of the current system, however, Trump could force the ‘hard call’ and make the system face change in order to re-balance itself.
    5. There’s enough complaints and controversy with both candidates, you need to look past them to what they represent versus who they are.
Think of Scotch Tape. It’s more than just something you can use to adhere one object to another. What can you make with it? I’ve seen a little girl make “glass slippers” with it.

As far as my vote goes, I’m looking to the person that represents the greatest change in the direction that’s needed most….not a slight change either….I’m talking ‘grab the wheel from the back seat and pull’ kind of change. Hilary represents the system as it is – she’s a product of it, and Trump represents tossing Mentos into Diet Coke. Sure it could get messy, but it also takes something used to standing still, and launches it upward.

To the commentaters who are against immigration: The iPhones and Macs many commentors are using, and enjoy are because of Steve Jobs- a product of immigrants. You’re enjoying Google today because of a Russian immigrant. Albert Einstein advanced science and he was an immigrant. A Jewish one who came to the US during a time when Jews were hated just as much as Muslims are today.

The truth is, your life is better today because of the hard work of several people- many of whom were immigrants that came to this country. The people who rail against immigrants are the same ones that have no problem using all the beneficial technology they have invented.

I am a dual citizen between the US and a European country. I was born outside of the US, and fall under the immigrant category. I work hard, pay taxes, am getting a graduate education in public policy and volunteer to make a positive difference in local American communities. The comments on here about immigrants being evil are heart breaking, because it’s so clear people haven’t taken the time to research both sides of the topic, policy stances or actually get to know proper immigrants.

    On Europeans and heterogeneity:

Europeans are happy because they have a different political system that allows for policies (both good and bad) to pass quicker. Amongst those policies are basic fundamental things that increase quality of life: maternity leave, access to healthcare, affordable schooling, etc. Europe is not as homogenous as this article is making it out to be. Nor is it perfect. I’ve actually lived on both sides of the Atlantic, and in several European countries.

Canada is quite heterogenous and ranked as having one of the highest quality of life in the world.

The US has a political system that was designed to make it difficult to pass legislation. Checks and balances. Separation of state and federal power.

Both systems have good and bad to them. Both produce different results, and not because of genetic homogeneity.

Trump’s speech at Gettysburg is on youtube. I suggest watching it. Even if people hate the guy, even if he doesn’t do anything which he says he will as President, at least the guy is pointing out issues that will hopefully wake people up.

(I don’t, however, agree with his desiring federal police: a Police State would be so bad for Americans.)

By the way, I was an idiot who voted for Obama the first time because he was black. Sheesh. I’ve since been learning a lot about politics so I have a little more knowledge, thankfully.

I think our best best is to pay close attention to our local governments and the hidden (un-elected) boards who are doing dirty deeds. They are the b*tches for the power elite and federal government. Act locally to keep our local communities great.

People who I respect say Hillary as President guarantees World War III. She has no loyalty to America, Americans or our liberty. She will only win due to rigged voting.

The first sentence from this article ( http://www.washingtontimes.com/news/2016/dec/22/kellyanne-conway-on-raising-kids-working-i-dont-pl/ ) – “Kellyanne Conway has a message for pundits who question her ability to hold down a job in the nation’s capital while raising kids — they should save the concern for adulterers and golf fanatics.” Priceless.

Reading this after nearly 6 months of Trump as president is kind of sobering. Realising the many good reasonable folks who were in a very real sense confused about the choices on offer at the last election, and because of that confusion voted for disaster. Now we discover that many of the stories circulating about what Clinton and Trump would do were based on propaganda spread by the Russians – all those stories about how Clinton was a warmongerer for instance, or that congress would unify to hold Trump in check, in hindsight seem pretty naive now.
