I need to tell you at the top of this that I also have a special guest for this webinar: Guy Kawasaki.

I probably should have a huge picture of Guy because really, he is the king of networking. The last time I hung out with him was at SXSW and he rented a limo to party-hop, because he was invited to all 50 parties that were going on that night. So we are bouncing from party to party and finally I announced, “Did you see how nice the lighting is in this limo? I’m not getting out anymore. I brought a book. I’m reading it.”

But Guy kept going. I asked him how he could manage that and he said,”It’s just part of my job.”

Networking is part of your job, too. It’s part of everyone’s job because really, all good things come from having a network.  Well, except one-night stands. But actually, I never had a good one-night stand, because if I liked the one-night stand then I would stalk the guy til he’d do it again and then it went from a good one-night stand to a bad short-term relationship.

So all good things come from networks.

The reason there is not a huge picture of Guy on this post is because I’m amazing at building a network, but my special skill is being able to build a network without ever leaving my house. Have I showed you a photo of my kitchen? I love it so much.

I love my kitchen because there’s nothing in it. So you can bet that my how-to-network webinar is not going to be about working a crowded room.

After living in LA for ten years and NY for ten years, I realized that I had an incredible network that allowed me to pretty much do whatever I want in my career, but creating that network didn’t require me to leave my apartment.

In fact, I do better when I network in front of my computer, because I have Aspergers. I have no social skills if you put me in front of people. So if you hate networking, I’m definitely your best teacher because I’ve had to learn to run my whole career without ever going to a networking event. And now I live on a farm, so I’m definitely not showing up anywhere, and my network is as strong as ever.

Melissa is also going to do the course with me. To give you a reminder, Melissa gets fired all the time, but she always gets a new, amazing job. You know why? She is incredible at networking. When Melissa needs a job, she just sends an email and gets one. I don’t even know how she does it, because I’m one of the people who fired her. So she’s going to tell all of us in the webinar.

We will have a contest in the webinar, and the winner will get Melissa writing emails for them to get a job. (I did not ask Melissa ahead of time, so Melissa, that is a little surprise for you.) We will rig the contest so crazy people cannot win. But you should know that Melissa and I have a very high tolerance for crazy. And, come to think of it, that might be why we are so good at networking.

So here is the outline of the course.

Session 1: Discover your best way to network.

It doesn’t work to network if you hate what you’re doing, because then people will hate meeting you. This session will help you find a networking tactic that is both effective and comfortable for you. I’ll tell you a bunch of tactics you never dreamed would work.

Session 2: Target people you need help from. Get them interested in helping.

Bonus guest! Guy Kawasaki!

Networking is about helping. If you know what you have to offer and you know what people need, then you are set. I’ll tell you how to figure out what people need. But also, since you are able to help a wide range of people (yes! really!) I’ll show you how to figure out who to focus on helping at which points in your life.

Session 3: Leverage your network to get whatever you want.

Do you know how many connections I have on Linkedin? Like 1000. But statistically, you only need 30 people in your network for it to be a killer network. I’ll explain why, and I’ll show you how you already have about half of those people, no matter who you are. Once you know who your 30 people are, you’ll be blown away by how you can leverage those people to get whatever you want next in your career.

Session 4: Q&A Ask me anything!

So before even taking yourclass here goes: can I interview you for my program TeachNow? Audio or video, 20 minutes, about how you teach, how your teaching has developed, and how you are building Quistic. Thanks for considering!

I think this webinar series sounds great! (I’m an INTJ and terrible at networking.) However, I am unable to attend 75% of those sessions in real time. Would you consider offering recordings of your sessions at a reduced rate?

        Hi Penelope,

Is there a limit to the number of times I can watch the videos? I do a lot of travelling and I may have to watch each video through several sittings. Would this be possible?

        Thanks

Are you thinking about writing a book about networking? Is it possible to get recordings? I am in Spain an I am not able to attend in real time. Thanks, Lalo

I am actually sitting on a big book contract for my memoir. So I don’t think I will write any other book til I get that one done. Which will probably be after my kids go to college because when else will I have time???

You can watch the videos whenever you want – each session is recorded.

Indeed it is a lovely kitchen. Should you do a house tour for all of us to increase visits on your blog. And that would mean more people to network.

Really, I love your lifestyle. I wish I could work from home. Let’s see what future brings.

      Penelope Trunk says:

First of all, I’m so happy you are liking my kitchen, because no one ever sees it since I live in the middle of nowhere.

Second of all, the way I got this life was figuring out how to build a network without ever leaving my house. Not that I don’t leave. I leave all the time, but only to go to kid stuff.

So you could have any life you want if you have a network to help you get there. And, to be honest, figuring out what we want is much more difficult than building the network. Which is probably why I’m doing the course on building the network….

I chuckled at this comment. Figuring out what we want is hard! Why is it so hard!? I wish researchers would look into this question in addition to pointing out how terrible we are at knowing what makes us happy.

I did get the stove!!! The blog feels so intimate when we don’t just talk about career and life dreams, but also our exorbitantly priced appliance dreams.

I was just thinking that, too! So glad you got the stove. I just bought a cool Irish-made wood-fired stove that I love. Maybe another way to measure work success–what kind of stove can I get?

A yellow kitchen with white trim is a must have for me. The light streaming in yours is lovely. I think my yellow is very similar to yours, but my ceiling is a 1/4 tint of the wall color, so it looks a bit more intense.

I’m at the same latitude as you and I think I would kill myself by spring if I didn’t have a cheerful kitchen. And I, too, have to have clear colors. Much better than Zoloft.

Just to confirm the webinar will be recorded and available online. I live in the UK so an 8pm webinar is sometime “overnight” but would be interested to subscribe and view later.

    Hi Penelope,
I love your kitchen- the stove, the sink, the island- it’s great! But I have to say… I LOVE when you post pictures of your music room (is that what you call it?) It’s adorable. And holy hardwood floors… Can’t wait til the day I no longer have carpet!

Penelope, what is the name of the paint color that you used in your music room? I’d love it for one of the rooms in our house when it’s time to repaint.

It’s Benjamin Moore 1676. I knew I wanted a light blue that is a little more gray than baby blue but would still look almost baby blue next to some colors. Maria Killam picked the color. Here’s a link to her blog about picking paint color:

I’m trying to figure out how one of your webinars can help me but I have such a lack of direction I wouldn’t know where to start. Only completed half my university before I quit, had four kids, and have been homeschooling them the past 13 years.

Other than some admin work the only thing I am good at is arguing with my phone company or any other company that is trying to rip me off and get what I want through going to higher levels, writing to executives and basically being stubborn until I get what I want.

This is my mid-life crisis! Trying to figure out what I’m going to do when my kids are done schooling without having to go back to school yet having no employment experience since I was 24!!!! Not sure how networking can help but so desire to have some sort of magical solution.

    • Penelope Trunk
      Penelope Trunk says:

Caralyn, you should take Get Your Dream Job Now. In hindsight I should have called the course “Figure Out What Your Dream Job Is” because most people don’t know what job would make them happy, but if they really truly did know the answer to that question, getting it wouldn’t be nearly as difficult.

So, Caralyn, you should take that course and the you’ll have a much better sense of how to forge a career path for yourself.

    Hey Pen-
I am a veteran of your classes…I’ve taken two online already and have two more in my sights. I want to say to all those who might consider your classes…you are lightening in a bottle!
There is a lot of spectacle and noise attendant in your presentations and some may ONLY pay attention to these external signs. But what you portend…what you call out in loud and bold fashion is pure undiluted truth.
I have to admit…I couldn’t make sense of it on the first day of the first class I took (I’ll be frank; I think paying the $350 tuition had something to do with that).
But curiously, I’ll also say the real nut of the material you address in your sessions started to make wild clear sense the longer I sat with it. Not an expected outcome when your instructor drinks wine from a water glass during her presentation.
This is a thank you note, BTW.
Glad you survived your childhood, volleyball hijinks, corporate life, courtships and marriages, motherhood, and exile in Wisconsin long enough to get Quistic up and running.
More than anything, what you are doing is RIGHT.
    Again, Thanks and Keep Going.

    Dear Penelope,

Today I got past the first round in competitive funding for a startup (they LOVED my proposal!). I just wanted to say that I got to this point because of you. Not just one post, but many, and I’ve taken much of your advice. I think the confluence of me taking all of this advice has me at the point that I am at, right now. Thank you, Penelope. I have to give a pitch next week, one of my first. I can’t wait! Thank you, Penelope!

I, like so many others, love your kitchen. I’m curious where items such as kitchen towels, mixing bowls, countertop appliances, etc., are stored. I know, it seems inane to ask, but I struggle with order in my kitchen. We homeschool, so I figure I’ll just straighten it out when the kids are grown and gone, but that seems unfair. They love cooking and I feel I should provide a kitchen that makes some sense for them. Yours appears to be very straightforward.

Stacyd, I have a similar kitchen and in my case,
there’s a pantry next to it where not only food and provisions, but also dishes, appliances etc. are stored.

I’ve never understood paying to learn these really, really soft skills. Why not just buy the business set’s go-to networking book for the past 8 years or so? “Never Eat Alone” by Keith Ferrazzi?

    Hi,
I’m considering taking this webinar, but the dates on this post don’t match the dates at Quistic.

Does it begin on Sunday the 6th or Saturday the 5th?

Will the Q&A be on Thursday the 10th?

    Thanks!

Finished the course last night and what a way to finish an insightful and fun course, as a Penelope and Melissa webinar always is no matter the topic. Loved the final comments about being authentically ‘you’ to connect with others, and not someone else’s version of you. Excellent and the information given the final night was worth the entire course price alone.

Thank you for always being authentic because it always helps to cut through the bs and just say things as they are. What you said about thinking about you career path and how you get there and ask if you really want that was so helpful. You’re so right because I love your career but knowing all it took to get you there would make me want to slit my wrists so as much as I want that career I’m not willing to go down that path. Hope I didn’t give too much away but really if someone wants to know about networking, they should take this course because you just cut through everything to get to the core of it.

Thinking about taking your Get Your Dream Job course next!

It’s been 11 days since you last posted on either blog. Hope you are doing okay. I miss your updates, want to say we, but it feels weird to comment for the rest of the blog readers.

Your life makes my life seem less like some bizarre crazy outlier (and I am pretty sure my life is boring, except when it’s not).

  22. Mary
    Mary says:

I really love your kitchen and how open it is. The first thought on my mind though, was: Wow, those pots and pans are really high. Are you able to reach those no problem? For someone short like me I’d need a stool! Still, I like how the pots hang and I dig the yellow.

As for networking, I hate it. You’re totally appealing to me. Your method of networking from home at a computer is something I never really considered before… Brilliant.
