[...] Tip 4: Link. Some people write cover letters and resumes entirely focused on themselves: I did this, I did that, I have this experience, and so on. On the other hand, others write it entirely focused on the job description, listing them again back to the employer. What is the problem with these approaches? They are incomplete, they miss the link. What you need to do is a bit of both, all the way through your job application. The employer needs skill X? I have developed skill X doing this job in the past. The employer needs this attitude/trait/experience? I have done something similar in XYZ, I have studied it in my MBA, I have transferable skills that are aligned to their needs. Link, always link, and you will keep reminding the employer why you are a great fit for the position. For examples on how to link what employers want with what you can offer check this blog by Penelope Trunk. [...]

"Perfection is totally overrated, and just having the guts to make an effort is totally underrated." There's nothing more motivating than such a statement. The idea of working for free can be devastating for some but imagine the times and efforts wasted looking for jobs that you will never be qualified without the experiences you can gain through volunteer work or service. Sometimes the very best lessons gained in life are those from the moments we shared our time for free because we enjoy what we do. Not that I suggest that we work for free, we just need to know when to help (without expecting anything in return).

[...] You know the saying that goes, “No one can make you feel inferior without your consent” (or something like that)? Well, the same holds true for your job. Nobody can tell you to stop working, and you don’t need to get paid for all the work you do. [...]
