I got 0 points :-( what the hell is wrong with me...
and I used to enjoy my work until the time when I realized that I got stuck in one and the same position for almost 4 years now, although I am considered one of the best people in my team.

I have been on the same position now for 4 years and I work really hard. I was recommended for the promotion during the last promotion exercise in my office but somehow, that appraisal review was not acted upon. I really need advice on what to do here cause I do not know when next I will be promoted in this establishment.

I have always thought that working hard to make improvments, working until the work was done and assisting employees with their needs and treating them fairly and consistently in my HR benefit representative role is what would help me get promoted to a benefit administrator or supervisor/manager within my organization. I have been told by upper management that I am very good at what I do, and my boss has told me he can't afford to replace me and it did get me one raise when I talked to him about changing roles within HR. What I have found, is that this specific job does not make you a likable person with the rest of the organization. Telling resigning, discharged or reduced staff when benefits will end or they no longer have their jobs is what I do. Also saying no to active employees or upper management who want you to bend the process or policy almost until it breaks gets you labeled even while apologizing for not being able to do something for someone. What do you when the only customers who thank you the most for doing a great job helping them are the ones leaving the company? The only way I see I can play the game of office politics in this role, is to meet the requests of those who hold upper level roles, even if I'm telling the next person no. I haven't been able to do this due to my own ethics but also it would be illegal in many cases. I believe I am respected for my standards, but promotion would be nice too. Politics are in every job you could have, you just have to find that even ground.

I wish I worked in your company! Inept but charming engineers get the promotions around here! I should've learned football rules and invite the manager to watch a game instead of busting my ass all these years at school.

I personally would never hire, let alone promote, a person who finds punctuation to be optional.

Penelope,

#1 is dead on - I am a quiet, hard working woman who uses her time efficiently. However, that wasn't enough to get me recognized by the licentious boss. He promoted a woman ahead of me who had less experience and less education. She liked to flirt with him (playing him like a violin) and wore low-cut tops, using it to her advantage. I eventually left the company (why would I want to stay working at a place where promotions go to women who act like Ginger from Gilligan's Island). BTW, I mentioned this to HR during my exit interview and they told me that they had rec'd other complaints of favoritism about this woman. Two days after I quit, the boss was fired!
