At this time there existed a very tight middle and upper middle class community that extended from the 1960's. Lots of black folks tied to the University. Doctors, lawyers, professors, etc. Jack and Jill clubs, cultural organizations, black fraternity and sorority events. These are the black Madisonians that are below the radar. Lots I knew went on the Ivy Leagues, and historically black colleges and unfortunately, didn't return. There was also an influx of lower income blacks who came for jobs and came for 'better state benefits.' So, there definitely is a strong black community, or there was but for my generation it became harder to find others with the same background to marry (if you understand my meaning) so we moved on to other cities and became parts of black middle and upper middle class communities with larger black populations - all-the-while bringing along our deep Wisconsin roots and loves, and accents.
