You must realize that each new hire has political motivations. It's your job to uncover the politics behind your position so you can figure out what you should really be doing instead of relying on your official job description.

All I can say is THANK YOU!

I am starting a new job in the morning and I am scared to death. I have no idea what I am going to be doing and I just learned this weekend that several other new hires in to this position (tech manager of an elite development team) failed in no time flat. Just reading your post reduced my anxiety levels tremendously.

Please keep up the good work!

One good question is: "What do you expect the person you hire to accomplish in this position in the first 90 days?"

If the person interviewing you does not have a clear answer to this question, then probably she does not have a clear idea of what job she really is filling.

But just becuase someone doesn't have a clear idea doesn't mean it's a bad job. For people who are good at office politics, an ill-defined job is an opportunity to create a dream job once you get hired.

Any suggestions for good questions to ask at an interview to try to uncover a company's real motivation for hiring you?
